Obviously everyone is jumping on the Arsenal bandwagon after they beat Chelsea 3-1 last night. It's Chelsea's worst run in the Premiership since 1996 and Ancelotti's job must be under threat. Arsenal have fired themselves back into the title race, they now lie 2 points behind Manchester United but have played a game more. However, i am completely unconvinced about Arsenal's chances to win anything. Even the most staunch Gunners fan would have to admit that Chelsea were hopeless last night. They had Frank Lampard back in the team but decided that they only needed Cech and Drogba on the ball in the first half. I lost count of the amount of times Cech hammered the ball from a goal kick towards Drogba who even if he had won possession had no one supporting him. It was absolutely hopeless. Stoke and Blackburn get accused of playing the long ball game but at least when they do there is some method to it. Chelsea had no idea what to do when they got the ball and if those one dimensional instructions came from Ancelotti, then the Italian must go. Far from brilliant Arsenal play, the 3 goals were all the result of horrendous defending from Chelsea so i don't think we've learned a lot about Arsenal in this game other than that Theo Walcott should start and Robin Van Persie's form is very worrying.
I do think that the quality of the league has dramatically declined (Look at Chelsea's bench and Manchester United's over-reliance on Giggs and giving a new contract to Anderson) but that has made it the most competitive season i ever remember. 8 points seperates first from sixth. 7 points seperates seventh from twentieth. It's difficult to predict what will happen in the second half of the season. I'll give it a shot though.
Manchester United are unbeaten despite playing dreadfully. If Rooney starts scoring United could romp away with the title. They also generally finish very strongly. I think Chelsea will finish second although an injury to a key player could see them missing out on even the Champions League. Manchester City to finish third if they can keep their players in check. Arsenal to finish fourth as i think the european campaign will take it's toll on Spurs.
Relegation is even harder to call. Aston Villa have money to spend so that might get them to safety. I'm going to go with Wigan, West Ham and Blackburn to take the drop. Blackburn are a mess and who knows if they can keep any of their players. Wigan will find it hard to keep N'Zogbia, Rodallega or Cleverley. West Ham have been so poor it's hard to find any case for them to stay up. Carlton Cole scored twice in the last game so if he can get on a run they may battle to survival. I doubt it though.

Man City Blow Chance At History
Everton won 2-1 tonight at Eastlands to deny Manchester City the top spot in the Premiership. With a win Man City would have been top at christmas for the first time in 81 years. Things fell apart quiet early for City as Cahill punished some horrendous defending to put Everton into the lead after only 4 minutes. The second could be blamed on a number of factors. Pablo Zabaleta went off the field to get treatment to a head wound and it seemed none of the City coaches or physios bothered to tell Mancini that the injury was worse than first thought. Mancini, himself should have made a substitute when Zabaleta didn't reappear after 4 or 5 minutes. Instead Everton took advantage of Zabaleta's absence and Kolo Toure produced two moments of dreadful defending to allow Leighton Baines curl the ball past Joe Hart. I thought Toure could have cut out Anichebe's overhit pass and then he turned his back on Baines instead of sticking out a leg and blocking the shot.
Despite City's lofty league position, there are still huge problems in the team. Carlos Tevez was rewarded for demanding a transfer by starting and keeping his captain's armband. No player is bigger than the club apparently, except Tevez. He should have been dropped. Jo was rewarded for scoring against Juventus last week by starting on the bench while a player who has caused absolute turmoil at the club this week starts. Ridiculous.
Gareth Barry and James Milner were anonymous. Adam Johnson scored in the last league game and started on the bench. He's also been one of City's best players this season and yet he seems to warm the bench in the majority of games. Milner, Barry, Yaya Toure and Silva(to a certain extent) are central midfield players. Four central midfielders in a game means no width, which is exactly how City played tonight. Everton jammed the middle and City couldn't create very much. Adam Johnson came onin the second half and gave a little bit of width and at least crosses started being delivered.
I also think Kolarov is a dreadful player. He kept coming forward and having shots from 40 yards out when he had support on all sides of him. That's not what you need when your losing a match from a defender. His free kick which he blasted at the wall should have been his last involvement in the game. Instead he played til the end.
Balotelli did nothing again. In the last game against West Ham he stormed down the tunnel after being substituted. Tonight he hobbled off the pitch when he missed a one-on-one with the keeper.
I felt that City should give Mancini time when others were calling for his head. Now I believe that City need a stronger manager. Obviously buying petulent, arrogant, overpaid whingers is a recipe for disaster but rewarding them when they act that way is going to blow up in the manager's face. City have the money to drop Tevez to the reserves for a year and replace him in the first team with someone else. Maybe that's what they need to do. Even the threat that the club could stall a player's career should be enough to see a change in attitude for some of the players. Until Manchester City take the power from the players they won't win anything.

Snow Ruins Big Weekend
Only 2 Premier League games went ahead this weekend with Sunderland moving up to sixth by beating Bolton(Sunderland's goalkeeper, Craig Gordon produced one of the best goalkeeping performances i've ever seen), and West Ham picking up a point at Blackburn. Manchester City could be the big winners as it looks as though their game against Everton will go ahead tonight and a win will put them top for Christmas. It's suggested that Tevez will play and with temperatures of -8 he will probably wear his snood and a balaclava.
I think the real winners of the weekend could be Chelsea. Frank Lampard will be fully fit when their game agianst Manchester United is rescheduled and a fully fit Lampard can influence the outcome in the game. John Terry and Alex may well be back to full fitness too. Chelsea have been in poor form but some of their crucial players have been injured and some are playing through the pain. A week of rest for them could reignite their title push.
The transfer rumours have already begun. A suprise one is Leighton Baines being linked with a move to Bayern Munich. Everton are only 2 points above relegation so a possible move could be on the cards but Bayern are seriously struggling themselves (14 points behind Dortmund)
Harry Redknapp is preparing a bid for Andy Carroll. £20 million and Peter Crouch is what some papers are reporting the offer to be. I think he'll stick it out until the summer as he is a proud Geordie and he may be vilified if he leaves and Newcastle go down.
Gerard Houllier has ostracised his whole Aston Villa squad by the looks of things. Richard Dunne, John Carew and Stephen Ireland look likely to leave in january. If he could get the best out of those 3, Villa could be battling for European places, instead they're in a relegation battle. If he can't re-enforce the squad with anything better than washed up 37 year olds, Ashley Young and Agbonlahor won't be long following them out of the club too.

Blackburn Could Be Relegated
At the moment Blackburn sit in 13th position in the Premier League table, 5 points above relegation. I expect Aston Villa, Everton and Birmingham to climb to mid table safety before too long. Wolves are looking rejuvinated with 2 wins in 3, thanks in part to the Stephen Hunt factor. There are also rumours that they could acquire Robbie Keane in January. That leaves Blackburn in a precarious position after they have been thrown into chaos with the sacking of Sam Allardyce. The new board want to see Blackburn challenging the top four. This is despite saying that Big Sam would have £5 million to spend in January when they first took over. Has something changed? Is there £200 million now available or is it a case of foreign investors who haven't a clue about football yet again having a ridiculous notion of their new club?
It looks like the later. Blackburn are a solid enough mid-table side but they are miles away from challenging for a Champion's League position. Allardyce (who has an over-inflated view of himself) did an average job with average players on an average budget. Nothing more could be expected of him until someone backed him with the cash. I don't particularly like Sam but i do feel sorry for him. If the new owners backed him to the hilt in January and he failed to move Blackburn into European places then fine. That didn't happen. The new board say they want a British manager and then reveal they've spoken to Maradona. It's ludicrous.
Who will honestly take over Blackburn if the board are demanding a top 4 finish? Rent-a-manager Sven has already ruled himself out. Pardew might take it if the wages are better than Newcastle are offering him! Martin Jol and Martin O' Neill are the early favourites but i can't see either of them being desperate enough to take the job. Jol is probably waiting to take over as Inter Milan manager anyway.
Either way it's a ridiculous situation and no offense to the Blackburn fans but the club deserve to be relegated if the board are allowed to get away with such stupidity. The fans should boycott the games and the players should refuse to play. It's time to make a stand.

Tevez Demands Transfer
Just as it seemed that Manchester City had found stability, their captain Carlos Tevez has demanded a transfer request. City are only three points off top spot and have won four of their last five games with one draw. Now Tevez has dropped this bomb-shell. Despite being City's best player this season he has constantly made headlines for the wrong reasons. Only last week he threw a strop as he was substituted with City winning 1-0 and reduced to ten men. He was also booked and missed yesterday's game through suspension. He seems to have a dreadful attitude and should never have been made captain of the team. He has also been allowed to return home to Argentina far too often (including this weekend). It seems ridiculous to me that you would treat a player to a trip home after picking up a suspension.
He has led a far too priviledged life at City and has had far too much power. He stated that the breakdown of his relationship "with certain individuals" is to blame for his desire to leave. City have turned down his transfer request but it remains to be seen if they can hold onto him beyond January. Real Madrid are probably favourites to sign him at this stage with Mourinho saying he needs another striker if they are to win the league. The fact that he has stated his desire to leave will affect his value. A swap involving Benzema and cash may tempt City to part with him.
Whatever happens (and i hope City stand firm) Tevez's image will be badly tarnished. Having already left Manchester United to join their biggest rivals, Tevez has shown that loyalty is not his strongest trait. However, given City's league position, the fact that he's captain and their reliance on him, this will look dreadful to potential suitors.

A Big Weekend For Boxing
There are a huge amount of fights taking place this weekend and i'll review the cards seperately starting with an Irish fight night which takes place tomorrow(Friday10th) in Tallaght's Basketball Arena.
Headlining the event is Anthony Fitzgerald, the Irish Super Middleweight champion. He's unbeaten in 9 fights and has to be considered a big favourite against Britain's Kevin Hammond. Hammond has lost his last 4 fights and has a record of 8 wins and 5 losses. Given that Fitzgerald only has 2 KO's to his name i'd expect him to win this one on points. Dolphil Promotions are hoping to move Fitzgerald on to a bigger stage next year with talk of a European title fight so he needs to impress here and I think he will.
Ireland's newest European title holder,Willie "Big Bang" Casey is also sure to draw a big crowd to this one as he fights Manuel Sequera on the undercard. Casey needs to be very careful as Sequera has 7 KO's in his 10 wins to date. However, he has lost 18, being stopped 11 times. Also, 5 of his last 6 fights have ended in a stoppage loss. Therefore, I would fully expect Casey to entertain the crowd before stopping Sequera early. Willie Casey is being touted as a possible opponent for Guillermo Rigondeaux in a world title eliminator early next year.
Unbeaten prospect, Dean Byrne, is also on the bill. Byrne fights out of the Wild Card Gym in L.A. and has been sparring with Amir Khan ahead of his showdown with Marcos Maidana. Byrne last fought in August where he stopped Konstantins Sakara in 4 rounds and he'll be hoping to put on a show for the home fans again. He's up against Sergejs Volodins who could be dangerous with 6 of his 7 wins coming by KO. However, with 11 losses to his name I fully expect Byrne to take Volodins out. Volodins has fought in Ireland twice in the past and hasn't managed to make it past round 5. I'd be suprised if this fight lasted any longer than that either. Byrne is hoping to fight for a European title next year.

Alan Pardew New Newcastle Manager
Another slap in the face for Newcastle fans and Chris Hughton as Alan Pardew signs a five and a half year deal with the club. Mike Ashley said Hughton was sacked because they are looking for a more experienced manager. Well they've found that. Pardew is more experienced at mediocrity and being fired. He was sacked as West Ham manager after their worst run of results in 70 years in 2006. He took over Charlton who he failed to keep in the Premiership. The following season he then guided them to eleventh in the Championship when they were favourites for promotion. He was sacked the following season after guiding them into the relegation zone. His last job was at League One's Southampton where he was also sacked. This time it wasn't his managerial performance but his personality which led to conflicts with players and staff, forcing Chairman Nicola Cortese to fire him.
What a step up for Newcastle United! A vote yesterday evening in a Newcastle newspaper on who should be the next manager saw him secure 14 votes out of 1000. It's difficult to know what the board are playing at. The next few fixtures are incredibly difficult, Liverpool, Birmingham away, Manchester City and Spurs. It could realistically be the new year before Pardew picks up any points when they face Wigan on the 2nd or West Ham three days later. A lot of players have already voiced their disbelief at the sacking of Hughton. They must be disgusted at the acquisition of Pardew. Newcastle face their biggest rivals Sunderland on the 16th of January. If Pardew doesn't hit the ground running he could already be facing the sack by then with Newcastle in a relegation dog fight.

The Stupidity of The Newcastle Board Continues To Astound
I know we should never be suprised by the sheer stupidity of the Newcastle United board but the sacking of Chris Hughton as manager still came as a shock to me. Mike Ashley continues to make the club look like an absolute shambles. Chris Hughton has done a fantastic job with a very limited bunch of players. At the moment they sit in 11th position in the Premier League. Only a month ago they hammered their fierce rivals Sunderland 5-1. They followed that up by beating Arsenal at the Emirates. Fine, they were embarrassed by Bolton 2 weeks ago but they followed that up by drawing with the champions Chelsea. Yesterday they were missing Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton, Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson. That's their two central defenders and two of their most influential midfielders. If you take that out of any team in world football, the team will struggle. They did. They were well beaten by West Brom but to sack a manager because of that is ludicrous. He's had to manage more people with behavioural problems then a prison guard and he still managed to get them promoted last year and into a comfortable position this year.
Ashley said that Newcastle are looking for someone with more experience to manage the club. Well they won't have a host of world class managers queueing up to take that position. Newcastle fans need to show Mike Ashley how they feel about this by not attending games and hitting him in his pocket. Most Newcastle fans are more realistic since the relegation and survival would have been seen as a reasonable achievement. It seems though that Ashley is determined to turn the club into a laughing stock. Maybe the rumour that he's a secret Sunderland fan is true.

Managers Have Lost The Plot
The ridiculous decisions of managers has been grating on my nerves since the world cup. But in the last couple of weeks the situation has gotten worse. Giovanni Trapattoni has lost his touch (and probably his mind) in the last few games in charge of Ireland. The loss to Russia at the Aviva Stadium was down to ridiculous tactics and the late goals did nothing to ease the embarrassment of one of the worst displays i've ever seen by an Irish team at home. He gets undue credit in Ireland for what he's done for the national team (which is zero in my opinion). He has won 10 games out of 28 which is quite frankly pathetic. Steve Staunton and Brian Kerr lost less games and were sacked.
However, despite this, my real anger towards Trapattoni is due to his horrendous treatment of young players. In the recent friendly against Norway, there was real excitement amongst Irish fans to see Seamus Coleman making his international debut. He was called up to the squad and left on the bench for 90 minutes because "Trap" thought we had a draw in the bag. We don't want a draw in a friendly game at home. We want to see the stars of the future. He has since said that Adam Rooney won't be called up any time soon. Rooney has 40 goals in 79 games for Inverness Caledonian Thistle including 11 in 15 games in the Scottish Premier Division this year. He deserves a chance for Ireland. He is the best we have at the moment. We all know though that Trap will play Robbie Keane who has played virtually no football this season and Kevin Doyle who has 1 goal for Wolves. It's complete nonsense. Play the players who are in the best form.
Another player is Aston Villa's Ciaran Clark who scored 2 goals against Arsenal, playing from midfield. Trapattoni in his wisdom has said he refuses to think of Clark as a midfielder because he saw him first as a defender. Rubbish again. The central midfield of Ireland is embarrassing. It hasn't worked, give someone else a chance.
David Moyes is under serious pressure at Everton and for him to drop Seamus Coleman against West Brom is beyond any sort of logic. He was brilliant against Arsenal and Sunderland in the previous games and i'm sure Everton fans were expecting a win against West Brom with Coleman playing a big part. Instead Coleman played no part in the game and Everton lost 4-1 at home. Moyes opted to play Victor Anichebe who was woeful and he then threw on Jermaine Beckford who has proven that he doesn't have the ability to play at Premier League level.
Alex Ferguson also blew Manchester United's best hope of a trophy and demonstrated my earlier point that Manchester United's squad is rubbish. Some of their bright young hopefuls played in the 4-0 loss to West Ham on Tuesday. Fabio da Silva, Chris Smalling, Oberton, Bebe, Anderson are all terrible. Sell them while you can Alex. They will never get better then they are now and they'll end up being loaned out to Ipswich.
